Rattan Weaving From Palembang, OKI, And Musi Banyuasin

South Sumatra has a long history as one of Indonesia’s important rattan regions. Rattan weaving is widely found in Palembang, Ogan Komering Ilir, and Musi Banyuasin, which are known as key craft centers for the province.

Traditionally, artisans produce mats, baskets, trays, and storage containers from locally harvested rattan. Over time, many workshops have expanded into chairs, stools, and simple living-room sets, using the same weaving techniques on stronger frames.

In Palembang, a dedicated rattan industry center in the 3 Ilir area has been revitalised, with businesses once again producing core products such as living-room sets, dining chairs, and decorative items for both local and export markets.

What makes South Sumatra’s rattan furniture unique:

  • It is rooted in village-based weaving traditions, not only factory production

  • Many products can function as both daily household tools and interior décor

  • Designs keep a river–swamp aesthetic: light, airy weaving that suits stilt houses, verandas, and tropical living

For homes, cafés, and homestays, rattan from South Sumatra brings a warm, handmade texture that carries the story of river communities straight into contemporary interiors.
